On the shore of Yanzihu (Yanzi Lake) in Pingshan District, Shenzhen, a building conceived as a "vessel of the earth" has opened its doors. The Shenzhen Natural History Museum — the first large comprehensive natural history museum in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the largest in South China — welcomed its first visitors on 28 July 2026. ERA supplied PVC-U electrical conduit, HDPE water supply pipe, HDPE drainage pipe and HDPE double-wall corrugated pipe for the project.
A Museum Built Around 4.6 Billion Years of Earth's History
The museum is one of Shenzhen's "Ten Major Cultural Facilities of the New Era". Its site covers 42,000 m², with 105,300 m² of total floor area, of which 35,200 m² is exhibition space. Eight permanent themed halls trace the story of the universe, the Earth, evolution, dinosaurs, humans, biology, ecology and the natural environment — a narrative that spans 13.8 billion years of cosmic history, 4.6 billion years of Earth and 3.8 billion years of life.
Why a Natural History Museum Demands More From Its Pipework
A venue that combines exhibitions, collection storage, science education and research places unusually strict demands on humidity control and waterproofing. For irreplaceable natural specimens, even a minor leak can cause irreversible loss. The building also runs complex constant-temperature and constant-humidity systems, security monitoring and digital exhibition equipment — all of which depend on a stable and safe power supply. That is the environment the pipe systems had to serve.
1. Water Supply — HDPE Pipe for a Reliable Line
ERA HDPE water supply pipe is extruded from high-density polyethylene. It pairs good corrosion resistance with ageing resistance, and its joints are engineered for reliability, reducing the risk of exactly the kind of leak that matters most in a building holding irreplaceable collections.
2. Drainage — HDPE Drainage Pipe and Double-Wall Corrugated Pipe Working Together
The museum's design incorporates a "sponge city" approach: four interconnected zones form a complete rainwater collection and ecological purification system. ERA HDPE drainage pipe keeps the site draining freely even in extreme rainfall, while HDPE double-wall corrugated pipe — with high corrosion resistance and high ring stiffness — suits the planted perimeter and the complex underground conditions around the building. Working together, the two form an efficient and ecological rainwater collection and discharge system.
3. Power Protection — PVC-U Electrical Conduit
ERA's PVC-U electrical conduit series provides flame retardance and impact resistance, protecting the cables and wiring that serve the museum's climate control, security and digital exhibition systems.
Different Landmarks, the Same Standard
ERA pipe systems already run beneath some of China's largest public buildings, among them the Shanghai World Expo site, the Hangzhou International Expo Center and the Zhijiang Cultural Center — one of Zhejiang Province's largest modern cultural complexes. In specialist venues, ERA has also contributed to the Yangzhou Grand Canal Museum, the Hangzhou Tea Expo Park, the Hanzhong Han Culture Expo Park and the Dalang Culture and Art Center.
